Exhibitions in Milwaukee

Moore Family Collection of New York City Art

What Is This Collection?

Alan W. Moore lived in NYC for over 30 years, working as a critic, artist, organizer and academic. During those years he slowly assembled a large collection of artworks for his parents in Milwaukee.

These are not “masterworks of contemporary art”, but rather an extensive assemblage of pieces by a wide range of artists working in lower Manhattan from the 1970s to the early 2000s, mainly on the Lower East Side.

A key focus of the collection is works from artists in the Colab group, of which Moore was a member, and artists working at ABC No Rio on the Lower East Side where Moore was co-director in the early 1980s.

The Moore collection was shown in Milwaukee in the home of Joan W. Moore in the fall of 2020 shortly after her demise. A second show is planned at the Walkers Point Art Center in the spring of 2021.

In addition to the works owned by the family, Moore is the custodian of another group of works produced by artists of Colab and ABC No Rio. These include three large collaborative pieces – two mural paintings and one large assemblage of individual works called “chain paintings”. He also holds an extensive collection of papers and ephemera related to this period of artistic production in NYC.

Milwaukee Home Show of the Moore Collection

During a first public exhibition in the Moore family home, the artworks were divided into different areas of the house, and roughly grouped by themes. The Living Room contained works by artists of the Colab group, most with strong social and political themes. There was also an assemblage of more abstract pieces, or work with a close connection to abstraction.

The Sun Room contained small objects. Most were produced as multiples for the yearly A More Store project of holiday sales begun by the Colab group in 1980 at the Times Square Show. This room also included folk and contemporary works by Mexican and Mexican American artists collected by the elder Moores. (Dr. Joan Moore was a sociologist specializing in Chicano/a gang research.)

The Hallway was hung with a wide variety of portraits.

The hangings in the Bedroom upstairs focussed on both East Village neo-expressionist and neo-conceptual work.

Two of the rooms contained racks holding matted but unframed works on paper.

Installation photographs and object lists describe the four areas of focus.
